The Sanford Education Center was constructed within National University’s headquarters in La Jolla, California. The Center was designed to replace the building’s lobby and core, which included a massive 30 foot water feature and staircase, all of which had to be dismantled and removed in pieces from the existing building.

Barnhart-Reese completed design-build services for the renovation of the main lobby area of the Center into a 6,000 square foot, two-story conference center with built-in desks and acoustical ceiling panels in a dramatic wave shape.  Eight classroom breakout rooms were constructed on each floor to allow areas for intimate charrette-style conferences, yet be electronically connected to the main hall activities via video screens.

One of the major challenges was the aggressive 7 month fast-tracked schedule for the project. Barnhart-Reese managers utilized various proactive planning elements such as ordering of long lead items and materials, and persistent evaluation and updating of the project schedule to complete the facility on time for the grand opening. Barnhart-Reese managers performed work throughout the night and attended coordination meetings during the day to expedite processes.

The project is a 2015 AGC Build San Diego Merit Award winner.
