STADIUMS
Delayed San Diego Project Set To Restart Soon
Stalled
for 15 months by legal wrangling, construction is set to resume
in March on the San Diego Padres'$450-million baseball park.
After completing a $169-million bond sale, San Diego officials
issued notice to proceed Feb. 16 to the project's contractor,
a joint venture of The Clark Construction Group Inc., Bethesda,
Md., and two San Diego-based contractors, Nielsen-Dillingham
Builders and Douglas E. Barnhart Inc. The city's bond
insurance company, New York City-based Ambac Assurance Corp.,
required that lawsuits be resolved before underwriting the
sale. The city has prevailed in multiple lawsuits, most
recently one challenging the project's revised financing agreement.
Team officials say the delays have cost about $20 million.
The stadium, which is about 20% complete, is expected to open
for the 2004 season.
