Barnhart
Inc completed passenger balcony at San Diego Cruise Ship Terminal
New
structure speeds up embarking/disembarking procedure
Barnhart Inc (deb) - a San Diego company - completed construction
of a passenger access balcony that will make cruise hip access
for embarking and disembarking ships easier at the San Diego
Cruise Ship Terminal. The project was contracted to Barnhart,
Inc. by the Port of San Diego. The fixed access balcony is
being build on B Street Pier, along the north side of the
Cruise Ship Terminal, and provides access to the pier via
a new mobile passenger gangway.
Passengers
getting on and off a ship currently use a narrow gangway that
connects the pier to the boarding deck of the ship. The current
process of boarding/disembarking the ship can take as long
as three hours. With the new 3,800 square foot balcony and
mobile gangway, hundreds of passengers can enter/exit at once,
making this process significantly faster.
The fixed
access balcony is a design/build project, a first for the
Port of San Diego. Design/build is a process that puts the
client, contractor, and designer in proactive roles through
every state of the project. The Port worked closely with Lee
& Sakahara Architects of Irvine to design this state-of-the-art
facility at a cost of $1.9 million. Due to its state-of-the-art
nature, Barnhart, Inc. is nominating this project for an Associated
General Contractors Bid America award for 2003.
