City office building design approved

On June 25, 2002, the Poway City Council approved the rustic Spanish Colonial design for the new City Office Building. The City Office Building is 50,400 square feet with a detached 5,900-square-foot, single-story multipurpose room and City Council chambers.

The architectural concept was designed by McGraw/Baldwin Architects with landscape by Architectural Landscapes. McGraw/Baldwin also designed the Poway community library and sheriff station.

The City Office Building is consistent with the Poway Road Specific Plan and includes tower elements, clerestory windows and a stucco exterior with wood trellised accents. Public art by noted Native American sculptor Johnny Bear Contreras will be featured on the site.

The city of Poway has contracted with Douglas E. Barnhart Inc. for construction manager services for the project.

City offices located at 13325 Civic Center Drive will remain in operation while the new facility is being constructed in the current parking lot north of City Hall and west of the existing modular buildings. Due to site constraints, the project will be constructed in three phases over a period of approximately 18 months. Construction began in October 2002, with completion slated for summer 2004. The project budget is $19.9 million.
